Break the Soda Addiction
Break the Soda Addiction
Break the Soda Addiction
I used to love soda. The flavor, the fizziness, the caffeine. All of it.
But I was addicted. I couldn't stop myself from having soda after soda.
That is, until I figured out a way to break free.

My Story
My Story
I've worked many late nights fuelled by a steady stream of sodas. I loved it.
But deep down I knew I was addicted. I was drinking more and more and the lack of control really bothered me. Finally one day I decided that I didn't want soda to control me any longer. I had to figure out a way to quit.
So, I came up with a plan. I knew that I couldn't just go cold turkey since my body was chemically dependent on it. I had tried that a few times and it had never worked. Instead, I devised a plan that would slowly break the grip that soda had on me and build up my strength. After 30 days I had succeeded and broken free. It's been more than 2 years since that day and I still haven't touched a soda.
I'm sharing that plan with you below. It's completely free. Give it a try. It hope it works for you too.

Phase 1: Loosen the Grip
Phase 1 lasts 10 days. The goal is to loosen the grip soda has on us. There are 3 rules:
1. Drink as much soda as you want. No limits.
2. Make the soda less appealing.
The best way to do this is to take the soda out of the refrigerator and drink it warm. If you prefer bottles then switch to cans. Consider switching to a brand or version that you don't like as much (but don't go caffeine free).
3. Make the soda more difficult to get.
I moved mine to the top of the stairs leading down to my basement.

Phase 2: Build Strength
Phase 2: Build Strength
Phase 2: Build Strength
Phase 2 lasts 10 days. The goal is to build strength and confidence that you can go without soda.
The rules from phase 1 still apply (drink as much as you want etc.).
What's new in phase 2 is a "No Soda" period each day where you can't drink any soda at all.
Days 1 - 4: 1 hour
Days 5 - 8: 2 hours
Days 9 - 10: 3 hours
You decide each day when is a good time period that works for you. The goal is to build up your ability to hold off.
It's important, though, that after the "No Soda" period is over that you don't "rebound" — you don't drink extra to make up for lost time.

Phase 3: Cut Down
Phase 3: Cut Down
In phase 3 it's time to cut back our intake. We will cut back by 1 can each day.
The quota for each day:
Day 1 — 6 cans
Day 2 — 5 cans
Day 3 — 4 cans
Day 4 — 3 cans
Day 5 — 2 cans
Day 6 — 1 can
Of course this is difficult. But the whole point of the program is to cut soda out completely and now, having gone through phase 1 and 2, you're ready for it.
Set yourself up for success by thinking about how to space out your cans throughout the day.

Phase 4: Make it Stick
Phase 4: Make it Stick
From this point on you are done drinking soda.
You are free.
There is one more step that can help make it stick.
We’re going to do a visualization.
Imagine a can of soda sitting there on the counter but it’s not a normal can of soda. Instead, the soda is a thick dark black fluid with a consistency like used motor oil. Now imagine you are being forced to drink it and it tastes like it looks – thick and disgusting.

Just the thought of drinking it makes you gag like you are going to throw up. Repeat this visualization a few times. Make it as real as you can in your mind. Feel your gag reflex kick in.
That's it! You're done and free.
